The musician gives £25,000 award winnings to grassroots music venues

The artist holding Mercury Prize in Newcastle
Sam Fender received the Mercury Prize in October in his hometown

The star has given the full amount of his £25k award prize money to the MVT, which works to protect the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

Fender was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to hand the money over to the trust, in appreciation of the crucial part small stages had in his initial steps.

"I couldn't be pursuing this success if it wasn't for all the gigs I played around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly 16 percent of the total UK scene.

In the last year, major artists including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

He also participated, collecting over £100k on his live tour to support numerous small stages across the UK.

The money supported spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations were granted funding support in improving infrastructure and gear that positively impacted artists and audiences.

"The idea that funds from performances in large arenas backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has said.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

When Pulp won the trophy in 1996 for their record Different Class, frontman Cocker announced that the group would contribute their cash to the charity the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist divided her prize across multiple organizations, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I contributed a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

Previously, Ezra Collective gave their winnings to the community center that nurtured their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally the 1994 recipients M People contributed their prize to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was quite enough," remarked singer Heather Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Recently, the trust revealed it had protected a couple of small stages in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

One venue in the city and the other in that location were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is funded by a national body and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
